Doughnut Plant

The Doughnut Plant is known throughout New York City and the country for being one of the most inventive and innovative doughnut shops.  I’m not talking about crazy doughnut flavors and things like that, though they can do that too (I’m looking at you, Strawberry Pistachio Ripple).  No, I’m talking about square, filled, doughnut rings.

Typically, filled doughnuts are known as shells (which have no hole in the middle) and the filling is injected into the shell.  Voila, a filled doughnut!

Not only have the people at Doughnut Plant figured out a way inject filling into a donut ring (regular donut shape with a hole in the middle), but they made them into squares instead of ring so that you get a bit of filling in every bite instead of having all of the filling in the middle.  Genius.

When I went to Doughnut Plant, I wanted to try a bit of everything that they had to offer, so I ordered a Vanilla Bean Yeast Doughnut, a Creme Brûlée Dough Seed (filled doughnut hole), and of course a Peanut Butter & Blackberry Jam Filled Square Doughnut.

The Vanilla Bean Yeast Donut was a great precursor and baseline to have for the rest of the donuts.  It’s a simple glazed yeast donut, but the addition of the vanilla bean gives it an extra punch that elevates it above a regular glazed donut.

The Creme Brûlée Dough Seed may have been my favorite doughnut just because I had never heard of it before and it’s a great idea.  Creme Brûlée is a simple custard with caramelized sugar on top, so just fill a doughnut with a custard and caramelize some sugar on top to give it that distinctive Creme Brûlée sugar crunch.  It’s such an obvious idea.  Hindsight is 20/20.

The Peanut Butter & Blackberry Jam Filled Square Doughnut is literally a mouthful as well as a really long name for a doughnut.  Doughnut Plant always makes their own jams, fillings, and glazes, and that definitely comes through in this doughnut.  As they set out to do with this doughnut, you get a bit of jam with every bite, which really rounds out the whole experience.

The doughnuts from Doughnut Plant may not be the absolute best doughnuts that I’ve ever had, but they are definitely up there with the best of them.  If you’re looking for more than a Dunkin’ Donuts or Krispy Kreme (as you should cause you can get those anywhere), then look no further because now you know about Doughnut Plant!
